So much of what happened in jazz, from the '20 particularly, was determined not by bandleaders or people whose names may be on the record, but it was determined by the arrangers. The arranger is a much underrated but very important factor in the whole development of jazz. Gil, as an arranger, fits right into that very important lineage.
